.KEY MESSAGES...

* Widespread critical fire weather conditions and wind impacts to
  travel and recreation expected this afternoon.

* Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are possible today and
  Saturday in Lassen and northern Washoe counties.

* Much cooler temperatures are expected through the weekend before a
  warming trend begins early next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Unusually strong low pressure will traverse to the Pacific Northwest
today, resulting in even stronger winds this afternoon and evening
areawide. SW/W gusts of 35-45 mph will overspread a large swath of
the region with stronger gusts of 55-65 mph likely for wind prone
locales and higher western Nevada terrain. Meanwhile, wind gusts
along Sierra ridges will reach 70-90 mph during the afternoon and
evening. Plan on bumpy flights into/out of regional airports,
hazardous boating conditions on area lakes, and strong crosswinds
when driving along I-580, US-395 and US-95 -- especially near
Washoe Valley, Honey Lake, and Walker Lake. Fire danger peaks
today (more details in the fire weather discussion below) so be
sure to avoid all activities that may cause a spark!

The aforementioned low pressure area will dislodge a cold front that
sweeps across the region tonight into Saturday morning. Winds will
weaken and shift to N/NW in the wake of the frontal passage.
Although gusty winds of 30-40 mph are expected across Mineral and
Mono County Saturday afternoon. Perhaps the more notable impact
will be a stark contrast in temperatures as we go from our recent
80/90-degree heat to daytime highs only reaching the 60s and 70s
today through Sunday. These April-like temps will be short-lived
as we warm back to typical summertime heat next week. Morning lows
in isolated portions of the Sierra and northeast CA will be near
or below freezing both on Saturday and Sunday. Showers and
thunderstorms will be possible each afternoon through Saturday
near the Oregon border and portions of the Sierra. Otherwise dry
weather will prevail into next week and beyond.

.AVIATION...

Gusty SW/W winds will develop this afternoon with surface gusts of
30-40 kts lasting into the evening. FL100 winds increase to 35-45
kts by the afternoon, resulting in LLWS and mountain wave turbulence
impacts in the afternoon and evening. Additional LLWS impacts are
possible tonight into early Saturday as a passing cold front shifts
winds to N/NW between 06-12Z. Otherwise, VFR conditions prevail
through the weekend.

.FIRE WEATHER...

...A Red Flag Warning remains in effect for eastern Lassen, Alpine
and Mono counties in CA, and western Nevada, where up to 6-10
hours of critical conditions exist this afternoon and evening...

Stronger winds arrive this afternoon as SW/W winds of 20-30 mph with
gusts up of 35-45 mph -- locally up to 65 mph in wind prone areas --
combine with RH of 5-15%. Daytime humidity will be a bit higher
from eastern Lassen County into far northern Washoe County
(15-25%), but compensating winds will maintain the fire weather
concern in this area this afternoon. Overnight recoveries improve
considerably for much of the region tonight into Saturday as RH
increases to 50-80%, but will be poor to marginal across Mineral
and Mono counties.

A cold front passes through the region late tonight into early
Saturday, inducing a wind shift to N/NW. Gusty winds and localized
critical conditions will be confined to Mineral and Mono counties on
Saturday. Otherwise, lighter winds, higher humidities, and cooler
temperatures prevail this weekend.
