Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
202 AM PDT Thu Apr 10 2025

.KEY MESSAGES...

* High temperatures today and Friday reach the lower 80s across
some western NV valleys but will fall short of record levels.

* The next weather system moves in Friday and Saturday with a
return of breezy winds and cooler temperatures.

* Warm and dry conditions will return next week as high pressure
sets up over the western US.

.DISCUSSION...

Temperatures peak today in the upper 70`s - low 80`s in western
NV and upper 60`s in Sierra valleys. To put this warm-up into
perspective, average temperatures for this time of year are low
60`s for western NV and low 50`s in the Sierra. Today, the Reno
Airport will come up just shy of reaching the daily high record
of 83, with a high temperature of 80-81 forecasted. Tomorrow,
around 77-78 degrees is forecasted for the Reno/Sparks area (no
risk of record breaking highs). The warm conditions for this time
of year correspond to Minor HeatRisk for lower valleys of western
NV/eastern CA both today and Friday. We`ll see an increase in
winds today as well, in the form of westerly zephyr-like breezes.

After the warmth, temperatures start to slide back down to near
average for this time of year (mid 60`s for western NV and 50`s
for the Sierra) Saturday and Sunday. A trough will swing by just
to our north and we`ll end up catching the southern edge of that
storm. Just a bit of cooler air being dragged south with that
storm, along with a very low chance (20-25%) of some light rain
showers Fri-Sat from Lassen Co. northward to the OR border.
Current CAM and NBM guidance still don`t have much of anything in
terms of QPF. Wind-wise it`ll be breezy Friday and Saturday
afternoon, with gusts up to 35 mph out in the Basin & Range.

After this weekend, we continue to stay dry as high pressure
takes over. Temperatures rise back up again, while mainly light
winds and mostly sunny skies return through next week.

.AVIATION...

Afternoon westerly breezes return today with gusts capping out at
20 kt across all terminals. Wind gusts increase to around 25-30 kt
Friday and Saturday due to a weak weather system passing by to
our north.

Well above normal high temperatures today and Friday for W NV
valleys, bringing abnormally high density altitudes for early
April.
